How to Schedule Instagram Posts in 2026 (Free Options and Limits)

The short version

  • Free, in the app: a public account can schedule feed posts, carousels and Reels up to 30 days ahead, 25 posts a day. Stories aren't in that list.
  • Free, on desktop: Meta Business Suite schedules posts and Reels for Instagram and Facebook, and its mobile app schedules Stories too.
  • Third-party schedulers: you need an Instagram professional account (business or creator). Meta caps publishing through its API at 100 posts per account in a rolling 24 hours.
  • Pick a scheduler when you post to several accounts or several platforms, or want a first comment scheduled with the post.

Option 1: Schedule in the Instagram app

Instagram has a built-in scheduler, and it costs nothing. According to Instagram's help page on scheduled posts, the rules right now are:

  • Your account has to be public.
  • You can schedule up to 25 posts a day, up to 30 days in advance.
  • It works for Reels, photos and carousel posts.

The steps:

  1. Tap Create (top left) or swipe right from your Feed, then pick Post or Reel.
  2. Select your photo or video and tap Next.
  3. Add your caption, effects or filters.
  4. Tap More options.
  5. Turn on Schedule this post (or Schedule this reel) and pick a date and time.
  6. Tap Done, then Back, then Schedule.

To edit, reschedule, delete or publish something early, go to your profile, open the menu, and tap Scheduled content under "Your insights and tools".

What doesn't work: Instagram says product tagging, collaborative posts, sponsored posts and fundraisers aren't compatible with scheduled content at the moment. So if your post is a collab, you either post it live or use a different tool.

This is the right choice if you run one Instagram account, only post to Instagram, and do your planning on your phone anyway.

Create once, post everywhere

post bridge publishes and schedules your posts to Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky and Google Business Profile from one dashboard.

Option 2: Meta Business Suite

Meta Business Suite is Meta's free dashboard for Facebook Pages and Instagram accounts, and it's the main way to schedule Instagram from a computer without paying for anything.

On desktop, per Meta's help article, you click Create post, choose your Facebook Page and/or Instagram account under Post to, add media, write your text (you can customize it separately for Facebook and Instagram), then set a date and time under Scheduling options. There's also an Active times button that suggests times based on when your followers were active over the past 7 days.

The Business Suite mobile app goes further: it lets you schedule posts, Reels and Stories. That makes it the free option for scheduling Stories.

On the window: Meta's Facebook Page help says Business Suite posts can be scheduled between 20 minutes and 29 days away. Meta doesn't publish a separate number for Instagram content, so plan on roughly a month out at most.

Business Suite is good if Instagram and Facebook are your only two channels. The catch is you need your Instagram account connected in Meta's business tools, and it does nothing for TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn or anywhere else.

Option 3: Third-party schedulers

Every third-party scheduler (post bridge, Buffer, Later and the rest) publishes through Meta's official Instagram API. That comes with a few rules worth knowing before you sign up for anything.

You need a professional account

Meta's content publishing docs only cover Instagram professional accounts. Switching a personal account to a business or creator account is free and takes a minute in your Instagram settings. If your account is connected to a Facebook Page that requires Page Publishing Authorization, Meta blocks API publishing until that's done.

The API posting limit

Meta says Instagram accounts are limited to 100 API-published posts in a rolling 24-hour period, and a carousel counts as one post. One section of the same page mentions 50, so if you're anywhere near that range, treat 50 as the safe number. For almost everyone this never comes up.

What the API supports

From Meta's docs and its media reference:

  • Single image and video posts, Reels, carousels (up to 10 images or videos) and Stories can all be published.
  • Collaborators can be added to feed images, Reels and carousels, up to 3 usernames. Not on Stories.
  • Shopping tags and filters are not supported.
  • JPEG is the only image format. Most schedulers convert for you.

Free scheduler options

If you want a third-party tool without paying, Buffer's free plan covers 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time. Paid Buffer plans start at about $5 per channel per month billed annually. Later has no free plan but offers a 14-day trial, with plans from about $18.75 a month billed yearly. A few things that trip people up:

Music. If you want a track from Instagram's music library, add it in the Instagram app. Meta's publishing API has no option to pick a library track, so whatever audio is baked into your video file is what gets posted. If the sound matters, edit it into the video first or post that Reel natively.

First comment. Instagram's own scheduler doesn't offer a scheduled first comment. Some third-party tools do, post bridge included.

Filters and editing. In-app filters and effects aren't available through the API. Do your editing before you upload.

Sizes. Get the aspect ratio right before scheduling so nothing gets cropped. Our guide to Instagram post sizes covers feed, carousel, Reels and Stories.

How to schedule Instagram posts in post bridge

post bridge is a scheduler built for one person running their own marketing. It's useful when Instagram is one of several places you post, or when you manage more than one Instagram account.

  1. Connect your account. Sign up, then connect your Instagram professional account. You can connect more than one Instagram account if you run a few brands.
  2. Write your post. Upload your photo, carousel or video and write the caption once.
  3. Adjust per platform. If you're also posting to TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn or others, override the caption for each platform so Instagram gets its hashtags and LinkedIn gets something more buttoned up. You can also set a first comment.
  4. Pick a time. Choose a date and time, or post right away. Not sure when? Our breakdown of the best time to post on Instagram is a good starting point.
  5. Schedule it. It shows up on your content calendar, and goes out to every account you selected at that time.

The point is posting the same piece once to several Instagram accounts and up to 10 platforms (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky and Google Business Profile) in one go. You also get bulk scheduling and post analytics for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook. If you use AI agents like Claude or ChatGPT, they can schedule posts for you through our MCP server.

Plans start at $39 a month for 15 connected accounts (Marketer) or $99 a month for 99 accounts (Operator), with unlimited posts and a 7-day free trial. There's no free plan. Details on the pricing page and the Instagram scheduler page.

Which option should you pick?

  • One Instagram account, nothing else: use the Instagram app's scheduler. It's free and it's enough.
  • Instagram plus a Facebook Page, and you want Stories scheduled: Meta Business Suite.
  • Instagram plus TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn or others, or several Instagram accounts: a third-party scheduler saves you from posting the same thing five times. That's where post bridge fits, and our guide on how to cross-post to multiple platforms walks through the workflow.

Whatever you use, switch to a professional account first. It's free, it unlocks insights, and every third-party scheduler needs it.
